RefNet - Network of Reference Librarians

The BIREME Reference Network (RefNet) is composed of librarians and information professionals who work in specialized reference services in the health field. Its main objective is to guide and contribute to the search and retrieval of reliable and relevant information from health information sources, facilitating access to scientific knowledge and supporting the development of scientific work and evidence-informed decision-making.

RefNet operates through various collaborative actions, such as webinars and workshops, which include both training activities and the sharing of information and exchange of best practices. These initiatives strengthen the competencies of reference professionals, keeping them up to date with the latest methodologies, tools, and resources in the health information field.

Among the key resources developed and used by the Network, the Search Strategies Repository stands out as a high-value information source. It brings together carefully designed strategies to support the efficient and accurate retrieval of scientific literature from both VHL databases and other international databases. This repository helps optimize the time of both reference professionals and users, contributes to the improvement of search development, and serves as a tool for managing and disseminating search strategy production.

In this way, RefNet directly contributes to strengthening capacities for information mediation, promoting equitable access to health knowledge, and supporting evidence-based decisions in the context of research, education, management, and healthcare practice.

Repository Goals:

  • To provide visibility to the search strategies developed by the VHL Reference Network for retrieving various health topics;
  • To enable their reuse by different audiences, in different locations and contexts;
  • To share the skills and competencies required for developing these activities;
  • To promote cooperation and contributions from other BVS network members, associated networks, and experts for the continuous improvement and updating of the published search strategies.
